Philip Hallawell was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1951, and was educated at Rugby School, in England, and at Haverford College, in Pennsylvania, USA, where he majored in Fine Arts. His work has been shown in more than forty exhibitions, one-man shows, group exhibitions and salons, and during three years was represented exclusively by André Gallery in São Paulo.
He was professor of drawing and painting at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo during six years. From 1989 to 1991 he presented the Drawing Workshop in TV Cultura's Revistinha program, and, in 1994 created, scripted and presented the series À Mão Livre - A Linguagem do Desenho, based on his book, published in May 1994, by Editora Melhoramentos. Due to the success of the book (8th Edition) and the series (still running on TVE Rio), he has been lecturing on art education and giving workshops in many different places, as well as his permanent workshop in Itu.
Presently he is working on a CD-ROM, À Mão Livre II- Workshop de Desenho, based on his first book, produced by Cybermind for Melhoramentos.
